# Resize the root disk of a virtual machine

PUT https://api.americancloud.com/api/v1/compute/vms/{id}/disk-resize
Content-Type: application/json

Resizes the root disk of a virtual machine. The new size must be larger than the current root disk size.

Reference: https://americancloud.com/docs/api/api-reference/vms/resize-disk-vms

## Authentication

- `X-API-Client-ID` header (required) — API Client ID
- `X-API-Client-Secret` header (required) — API Client Secret

## Request

### Path parameters

- `id` (string, required) — ID of the virtual machine

### Body (application/json)

This endpoint expects a ResizeVmDiskDto.

- `sizeGb` (integer, required) — The new size of the root disk in GB. Must be larger than the current root disk size.
- `reboot` (boolean, optional, default: false) — Whether to automatically reboot the VM after the resize completes. Only applies when the VM is running. A reboot is required for the OS to recognize the new disk size.

## Response

### 200

The disk resize operation has been initiated

- `id` (string, required) — Virtual machine ID.
- `status` (string, required) — Transitional state during the resize.
- `rebootInitiated` (boolean, required) — True when the VM was running and `reboot=true`, so the new disk size was applied via a reboot. False otherwise (VM was already stopped, or `reboot=false`, or the reboot step failed — see `message`).
- `message` (string, optional) — Present only when the disk resize succeeded but the follow-up reboot failed; surfaces a remediation hint to the caller.

## Errors

### 400 Bad Request Error

Invalid size: must be larger than current disk size

- `statusCode` (double, required) — HTTP status code.
- `message` (ApiErrorDtoMessage, required) — Human-readable error message. A single string for most errors, or an array of strings when the request failed multiple validation checks.
- `error` (string, optional) — Short HTTP error label.
- `code` (string, optional) — Machine-readable reason for the error. Match on this value rather than on `message`, which can be reworded at any time. Present on the errors that have more than one cause for the same status code; omitted otherwise.
- `errors` (list of ValidationErrorItemDto, optional) — Per-field validation details. Present on 400 responses produced by request-body validation; omitted otherwise.
- `snapshots` (list of BlockingSnapshotDto, optional) — The snapshots that block a delete. Present on a 409 whose `code` is `volume_has_snapshots`; omitted otherwise.

### 401 Unauthorized Error

Authentication credentials were missing or invalid.

### 403 Forbidden Error

The authenticated principal is not permitted to perform this action.

### 404 Not Found Error

Virtual machine not found

### 500 Internal Server Error

An unexpected error occurred on the server.

## Types

### ApiErrorDtoMessage

Human-readable error message. A single string for most errors, or an array of strings when the request failed multiple validation checks.

### ValidationErrorItemDto

- `field` (string, required) — Dotted path to the field that failed validation.
- `message` (string, required) — Human-readable validation message for this field.

### BlockingSnapshotDto

- `id` (string, required) — Snapshot ID.
- `name` (string, required) — Snapshot name.
